I'm moving...

my blog to a new site. Blogger has been great to me, but it is time. I have a Tumblr account now and I can post from my phone, which means that the two people who follow me will actually get to see new posts! My new blog: liggettfamily.tumblr.com. See you there!

it's about time...

to start blogging again. my sister is going to have a heart attack.

note: i am going to attempt to go back and recreate blog posts with a date and time stamp of when they actually happened, so as to establish an accurate timeline starting from this past june. we'll see if it works.

doctor appointment today where i finally get to meet the actual doctor! (until now i have just been seeing the nurse practitioner). brad is coming so we can meet the doctor together, and so he can hear the heartbeat.

the appointment goes well. i ask questions, get a flu shot, and we hear the baby's heartbeat. brad's take on the experience can be read here. i cry every time i read it.

the benefit of being friends with a state parks employee that works at hearst castle: brad and i get to swim in the neptune pool.

growing up so close to hearst castle, i had many opportunities to tour the grounds and i always wished i could swim in the pools. today, my lifelong dream came true! we even got to change in the original changing rooms, which were beautiful. the experience was amazing, especially because it was a blisteringly hot day and the water was nice and cold. some friends got a few pictures of us; i'll try to track them down and post them here.

september 19-24

this week we spend a few days at disneyland, then head up to monterey where brad has some continuing legal education classes to attend.

disneyland is so fun; we spend lots of time with brad's brother and friends, and there are a surprising number of rides i can still go one while pregnant. of course the funnest rides are out: no space mountain, splash mountain, big thunder mountain railroad, or california screaming. however, the benefit is that no one bugs me to go on tower of terror. while waiting for everyone to get off big thunder mountain railroad, i even got to see kelsey grammer walking around with his daughter. he looks way old in person. later that day brad saw whoopie goldberg in california adventure, but i missed out on that.

on wednesday we take our leave and head north to monterey. we stop for dinner at a subway in soledad and i accidentally leave my purse hanging on the chair (stupid pregnancy brain). and just my luck: someone takes the purse and uses my credit cards instead of turning it in. i feel so violated. thank goodness i realize i don't have my purse an hour later instead of the next day. i am able to cancel my credit and debit cards before too much damage is done, and i contact the soledad to file a report. it still doesn't bring back my lost purse, wallet, camera (that was the worst), car and house keys (we changed our house locks, just in case), a book, and some sentimental items that i am sad i will never get back: my very first library card (i was still using it!), a notebook with notes from brad, a note from my brother, and so on. i hate jerks with no sense of right and wrong.

thursday and friday i hang out in the motel room and wait for brad to finish his classes. friday afternoon i am not feeling so hot. i leave to pick up brad from his last class and as i am in the car i realize that i am not merely feeling nauseous, i am actually going to throw up. right now. i pull over to the side of the road, open the car door, and vomit on the roadside while still strapped into my seatbelt.

all in all, it was a very long, very eventful week.

we are at twelve-and-a-half weeks, so we begin the process of announcing our pregnancy. first up: my parents!

brad and i organize a lunch date with my parents to "thank them for providing us a place to live for a year." we are both very adamant that both parents must be in attendance, and nervous that something will fall through and all our plans will be ruined. thankfully that doesn't happen, and we all meet at Pan Olivo in paso robles for a nice lunch. after we order, i pull out a thank you card for my parents and hand it to my mom. she reads: outside: "thank you," inside: "for everything. and congratulations, grandma and grandpa!" and then screams, "are you serious?" and starts crying. my dad reads the card and gets the classic "dad smile" he gets when he is really happy. it was just the reaction i was hoping for.

after lunch i call my sister and tell her that she will have to plan a vacation to come visit us around march 30 because that's when our baby is due. she is also very excited.

i don't get ahold of my younger brother until that night, and i tell him straight up: "i just wanted to call and let you know that we're having a baby." and his reaction is exactly what you would expect if you knew my brother. one of the first questions he asks is, "so, are you getting fat?" i love him.

the announcement to my older brother comes the next day. i left a message for him on saturday, and on sunday he texts me that he is awake and can talk any time. when i call, his first statement is, "hold on, let me go get [wife's name]." he knows what's coming because i never call him. because he knows, and i know he knows, i ask, "do i even really need to say it?" and his reaction is, "yes, definitely."

brad's calls to his family go pretty much the same way. that sunday night we drive down to disneyland to spend the weekend with his brother, and make a little stop at ikea for a crib and changing table. when we meet up with his brother and brother's wife at downtown disney, brad says, "hey, look at what we just got at ikea" and shows them a picture of the crib. brother and brother's wife scream and then ensues lots of hugging and some crying (on the part of brad's brother; he's such a softy). that weekend they buy us baby's first toy: a mickey mouse doll.

his parents are the last to know because they are in germany and we have a killer time trying to get ahold of them through skype. they just didn't understand how much we needed them to get online!

september 14

i have noticed that i am definitely a lot more sensitive now that i am pregnant. i have always been a crier, but now it's getting out of control. classic example #1: i am on my way to work, listening to oldies on the radio. the song "downtown" by petula clark comes on and as i am singing along, i begin to cry. i change the station, get myself under control, change the station back and begin to cry again almost immediately. what? who does that? i still don't have any reasonable explanation for why that song did me in like that.

classic example #2: i am at work and i read a story about the wife of one of the trapped chilean miners giving birth to their first child while her husband is still underground. of course i completely lose it; i had to take a full 15 minutes before i was able to get back to work.
